And now he faced an ultimatum. Either he could leave Valkyrie's dead body and flee to safety, or he would stay with her, and die with her. Because they promised each other to save each other, until the end. And saving her meant dying with her. Actually, he might as well be dead. What was the point of living again if you have nothing for you? Skulduggery tenderly lifted the protective jacket from her shoulders, careful not to jostle her. He didn't have a lot of time left now. He bent forward, pressing his chalky forehead to hers, and he would have closed his eyes, had he any. "Goodbye." He whispered. And he forced his bones to move as he walked from the burning inferno, the hell behind him. He wanted to stay behind. He would have, but the others needed to know what happened to her, what became of her. Anything was better than living this life now. He would rather be taken apart bone by bone, a thousand times over than have to endure this emotional turmoil.
Later that day, he glided into the Sanctuary's meeting room. Ghastly and Ravel, and everyone else sat around the circle, planning for the final attack on Darquesse. All conversation stopped at his presence. "Skulduggery, we told you not to come in here." Ravel disapproved. "We don't have time for your antics, and-" "She's dead." "What?" "Darquesse, she's dead. I killed her." Ghastly pushed from the table, standing forward. His eyes are wide. "I don't believe you." His eyes shifted down to the tattered jacket in Skulduggery's fist, almost ripped to shreds. "Skulduggery..." Ghastly began, his voice hesitant. "Is that Valkyrie's?" Skulduggery threw the jacket across the table where it landed in the light. No one said a word. Skulduggery did, naturally. "Valkyrie Cain died today, saving the world. She had found a way to beat Darquesse, and in the end, it was her against Val. Through it all, Valkyrie had somehow found a loophole in Darquesse's defenses, and managed to- however briefly- make Darquesse a human again. Valkyrie gave up her life to make this happen, and in the end, I was the only one with a clear shot of Darquesse. And I killed her. Valkyrie died, and I killed her." he looked to the floor, to ashamed to look up. "Skulduggery... Was Valkyrie Darquesse?" No, she wasn't. Valkyrie was so much more than pure hatred, because that is nothing.Valkyrie was hope and love and determination, and Darquesse was power and greed. Valkyrie was so, so much better than her counterpart, and in the end, she found a way to move past it for the greater good. Because that is what it is like to be human. The darkest of us are the lightest, and the most wounded are the healers.
"No." Skulduggery said, "No, she wasn't Darquesse. Not today. Today, she was the hero."

Skulduggery stood in front of his friend, the only person that made him happy, the way he was before he was a skeleton. For centuries he hated himself, the way he was, and the only way he could cope was to hide his pain under a layer of snark and wit. But she was the only one that he felt safe around, the only one what he trusted enough to show what he was truly like.
And he stood before her now, his only friend, his wonderful monster as blood ran down her temple.
He ran forward and caught her before her knees hit the pavement, and cradled. He had always loved her, but he wasn't in love with her. The relationship that they had was unique, and different than all others, but it was more than just a friendship, a partnership.
"I'm sorry, Stephanie." He said, as the last breath left the only thing that made him happy.
The car behind them, burning itself up, flared suddenly, and Skulduggery felt that it's explosion is inevitable. The air shifted and the fire's heat intensified. Yes, it was going to explode.
And now he faced an ultimatum. Either he could leave Valkyrie's dead body and flee to safety, or he would stay with her, and die with her. Because they promised each other to save each other, until the end. And saving her meant dying with her. Actually, he might as well be dead. What was the point of living again if you have nothing for you?
Skulduggery tenderly lifted the protective jacket from her shoulders, careful not to jostle her. He didn't have a lot of time left now. He bent forward, pressing his chalky forehead to hers, and he would have closed his eyes, had he any. "Goodbye." He whispered. And he forced his bones to move as he walked from the burning inferno, the hell behind him. He wanted to stay behind. He would have, but the others needed to know what happened to her, what became of her.
Anything was better than living this life now. He would rather be taken apart bone by bone, a thousand times over than have to endure this emotional turmoil.
Later that day, he glided into the Sanctuary's meeting room. Ghastly and Ravel, and everyone else sat around the circle, planning for the final attack on Darquesse. All conversation stopped at his presence.
"Skulduggery, we told you not to come in here." Ravel disapproved. "We don't have time for your antics, and-"
"She's dead."
"What?"
"Darquesse, she's dead. I killed her." Ghastly pushed from the table, standing forward. His eyes are wide.
"I don't believe you."
His eyes shifted down to the tattered jacket in Skulduggery's fist, almost ripped to shreds.
"Skulduggery..." Ghastly began, his voice hesitant. "Is that Valkyrie's?"
Skulduggery threw the jacket across the table where it landed in the light.
No one said a word.
Skulduggery did, naturally.
"Valkyrie Cain died today, saving the world. She had found a way to beat Darquesse, and in the end, it was her against Val. Through it all, Valkyrie had somehow found a loophole in Darquesse's defenses, and managed to- however briefly- make Darquesse a human again. Valkyrie gave up her life to make this happen, and in the end, I was the only one with a clear shot of Darquesse. And I killed her. Valkyrie died, and I killed her." he looked to the floor, to ashamed to look up.
"Skulduggery... Was Valkyrie Darquesse?"
No, she wasn't. Valkyrie was so much more than pure hatred, because that is nothing.Valkyrie was hope and love and determination, and Darquesse was power and greed. Valkyrie was so, so much better than her counterpart, and in the end, she found a way to move past it for the greater good. Because that is what it is like to be human. The darkest of us are the lightest, and the most wounded are the healers.
"No." Skulduggery said, "No, she wasn't Darquesse. Not today. Today, she was the hero."
