Ali

A little over half an hour ago, I buried my doggy.

Not one of the silly doggies. Mable passed away a few months ago, and Sherlock is still pottering around the kitchen. No, this was MY doggy. This was Ali, my German Shepherd, my Alsation, the best dog in the whole world, and the undisputed love of my life.

Almost fourteen years ago, we needed a dog. I was living at home and working on the farm, and it was decided that we were getting a new dog, a few years after our last one had died. My mum, being my mum, looked upon this decision as a starting point. From here, the breed would be chosen, we'd start asking around, and then, in a few months time, we'd actually get the dog.

My dad, being my dad, looked upon this decision as a go-ahead to get a dog the very next day.

And so, while my mum was at work, we drove to a house down the road who'd just had a brand new batch of puppies. It was my little sister who picked which one we'd take home — she picked the quietest out of all the yapping pups — and we took the pup home, and I was in love.

It was obvious to everyone that she was going to be mine. We kept her in a shed for the first week or two, because she was filthy and she smelled terrible. But every evening after work I was in that shed, sitting on the ground with her. I couldn't stand to hear her whine. I couldn't stand the thought of her being lonely. I convinced my parents that she should be an indoor dog, and after she'd been washed and didn't smell quite so bad, my folks gave in.

Oh, and her name? I remember this discussion VERY clearly. We were all in the living room one evening. I wanted to call her something awesomely cool. I'm pretty sure I wanted her named either Buffy or Xena. Nobody else agreed with me. But, I argued, I'm the one who's going to be looking after her and feeding her and spending the most time with her. Surely I should be the one to name her?

Apparently not. I'm pretty sure it was Audrey who suggested the name. Remember, this was fourteen years ago, and the TV show Ally McBeal was at the height of its popularity.

"Ally!" Audrey said. "Because she's an Alsation! And also Ally McBeal!"

I was outvoted, but I vowed that day that my doggy's name should forever be spelled... Ali.

(Take THAT, Ally McBeal.)

Ali became a part of the family. Granted, it was the part of the family that slept in the kitchen and to whom my older sister Nadine never REALLY warmed. Every so often she'd look at Ali lying there, and she'd soften, and go over and pet the dog and say nice things. And then the moment Ali nudged against her Nadine would freak out and the dog would wonder what the hell was going on.

But we all loved her. When she was a pup, she used to run at whoever was sitting in the armchair in the kitchen, leap up and stand on their chest/shoulder/head and look around, like she was proudly surveying her territory. A year or two passed, and it never occurred to her that maybe she was too big to keep doing that, so she kept doing it. Many a time my dad would be sitting in the armchair reading the paper, and I'd see Ali readying herself like a sprinter on the block. Suddenly she'd leap, bursting through the newspaper, and dad would cry out in alarm and there'd be a mad scramble of legs and then sudden stillness, and she stood on my father's chest, one paw in his face, looking around at her kingdom. And the only thing we'd hear from dad would be a "Bloody mutt..."

Then, of course, she got too big and too powerful even to do THAT. The amount of times she'd leap onto dad and find herself hurtling over the back of the chair...

Ali had many talents. She was a bit of an actress, appearing in my very first movie, Dead Bodies. She can be seen at the start, jumping up and down at a patio door. I was on the other side of that door, though you can't see me, leaping about like a nutter in order to get her excited. That was her first and only film role. I think she realised she had a choice to make — LA, or Ireland. She chose Ireland.

I wrote the first Skulduggery book with her in my room. Every single evening I'd sit at my computer, writing away, and I'd hear the pat pat pat of her approach, and she'd nudge the door open with her nose, walk in, jump up on my bed, and curl up and watch me. That's how we spent our evenings. She wasn't happy without me and I wasn't happy without her.

After the book got picked up, I went to New York for a week to meet with my American publishers. After a few days I started to miss Ali DREADFULLY. I called home and my mum told me that Ali was spending her nights in my room, waiting for me to come home. When I finally did come home, she  got all excited and started bouncing and whirling in circles, and then we went to my room, and she got up on the bed and I leaned in, and she licked my face for fifteen minutes. It was disgusting — by the end of it, my face had a thick layer of saliva coating it — but I didn't want to move. Fifteen minutes. I counted.

I used to take her for long walks around the fields a couple of times a day. Whenever I'd get stuck writing, off we went. I'd sort out problems with the plot as I walked, and Ali would chase birds and rabbits and splash in puddles and come back to me every now and then for a cuddle, then bound off again. Those memories are some of my favourites from when I was living at home. I was happy, I had a future, my family was proud of me, and I had my dog.

In 2008 or thereabouts, I moved out. I bought a house seven minutes away, so every evening I could go back to visit the folks and walk the dog. For a long time after I moved out, Ali would wait outside my old bedroom for me to return. I hate thinking of times like those, times when she was disappointed or she missed me and I wasn't there. She got used to the new arrangement, of course. Now she started looking forward to 5:30, when I'd walk in. Around that time every single day, she'd be waiting at the kitchen door. She'd get so excited to see me, and after we'd played around and she settled down, she went back to the door to wait for my mum to come home. Her ears would perk up and I'd know she heard an engine, and I'd open the front door just as my mum got out of the car and Ali would race out, excited all over again.

About four years ago Ali got cancer. She developed a large tumour on her belly. I was distraught. She had an operation to get rid of it, but the vet told us the cancer was going to come back. He gave her two years, maybe. Two more years with my dog.

These last few years, Ali got old. She got stiff. The long walks became shorter and shorter. She couldn't handle it anymore. And suddenly there were babies in the house, wobbling about. Ali didn't know quite what to make of them. She learned pretty early on to try and stay away if she possibly could. She was great with the kids. She's never been anything other than gentle and loving and lovely.

Yesterday I took her on a short walk, just out to the shed. We reached the shed and she lay down. This wasn't normal. I went over and petted her and she seemed fine. She got up and followed me to the postbox, and lay down again. Then she followed me back inside the house, and went to her mat and lay down.

"Is everything okay?" my mum asked.

"No," I said.

She had perked up this morning, according to the text my mum sent, but by this afternoon she was lying down again. We took her to the vet. She lay in the back of my jeep and he came out, but he didn't even have to examine her to see that the cancer was back. He injected her there and then and I cried. I haven't cried like that in... I don't ever remember crying like that. I'm crying right now. I love my dog and I miss her, and the reason I'm writing this is because she deserves to be remembered.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. A little over a year ago, we had to put our cat to sleep - he was sixteen years old and had been sick for a while, and it was the only thing we could do to stop his pain. I've been with that cat since I was a kid, through my teens and into adulthood and he'd been one of my best friends. I'd gone to the UK to do my Master's degree, and when my mother told me on Skype that the cat was ill again, I was so worried he'd get worse and worse and I wouldn't be able to say goodbye. But thankfully, I was. I was there with him and I supported and helped and hugged and kissed him as much as I could. Pet death is an awful, awful thing, but my cat had a great life and he was a beautiful, smart cat - and Ali sounds like she was a wonderful, happy dog and she had a good, long, lovely life. You were lucky to be her human and I am sure she was just as chuffed to be your dog. Hang in there.

I like to read before I go to bed. Anyone here familiar with the works of Gordon Edgely? And The Darkness Rained Upon Them was excellent, though since then several lost manuscripts of his have turned up, each one better than the last. I find it fascinating that his books have gotten so much better now that he's dead. I wonder how many 'lost manuscripts' he's hidden around his manor.

And I don't let them be killed, so they just get thrown out of ground-floor windows. But they just come back in again, and repeat the process. :P )

@Star: I KNOW! :) I ADORE YOUR USE OF THAT QUOTATION. I'm fairly sure I even copy/pasted it from here, once, so it's saved in a file on my desktop, where I can locate and read it when I want to, and thank you for that. :)
I didn't read the rest of the trilogy yet. I might, at some point, but for the moment. I feel like Philip Pullman created a LOT in the first book alone, and in terms of size and imagination it's a lot to take in at the moment. I think that's why I struggled to pull myself through Northern Lights, towards the end. I had it open for a number of chapters, and then shut for a number of days, on and off hiatus, and I think to read the next ones would be too much of an endeavour for me, right now.
When I'm set into the world of words again, though, I do look forward to the finding that quote in the book, and smiling to myself because Starness, in addition to the plain awesomeness of the quote. :)

A dog dying is a dreadfully painful thing. I held my dog that I had since I was four years old when she got put down last October due to arthritis. Every time I walk past the straw shed where she slept I look back as if I'll hear the shuffle of her getting up off the straw. I miss opening the door of the car when we drive into the yard and her bounding up and nearly jumping into car with excitement. Every dog I see reminds me of her. Best decade with my doggy <3

I get what you mean. :)

I think that trilogy is a trilogy that sticks in your head, thinking about my quoting and the fact I started referencing it to my friend the other day, when I haven't read it in ages and was never, you know, really into it.

. . .
I think I read the books too you. You appreciate things like that better when you're older.

You know, my brother wants to read Percy Jackson and Artemis Fowl and Skulduggery Pleasant, and I'm not sure I want him to, because if he reads them now (he's only nine), he won't appreciate them as well, so I want to wait till he's slightly older.

I don't even know where I was . . .

Oh, yes, that. :)
Well, if I was going to say anthing else, I forgot it, so. :)

3) Even if John was dead, you've only met him once, so he's probably not worth dying for. Also, you have daughters and a country to look after, and it really isn't wise to abandon them by blowing up in a parallel universe.

Now Star, you see, RE is a very poorly worded subject, and is not aimed to literally tell you what people of a faith believe, but it's general beliefs and standpoints. Clearly, just because a person is of a faith doesn't mean it agrees with everything about said faith, taking extremist Buddhists as one of the best possible examples, but I think that they trust the students to be clever enough to work out that as people don't all think the same. Now, whether this is true in every case is a conversation that doesn't need to be had, but RE isn't literally saying "THIS RELIGION BELIEVES THIS. THE PEOPLE OF THIS RELIGION BELIEVE THIS." But more giving you the general outline of the faith and some insight in more detail to it's core teachings.

Lunaeria said...

I lost two dogs and my rabbit this year. All three to old age. It hurts. It will always hurt. But I comfort myself with the knowledge that they lived long and happy lives, and I was there by their side when they decided it was time to leave. I remember reading a story about a young boy present as his dog passed away. His parents were distraught at the loss, but the boy was not. He was calm. His parents said something along the lines of, "Why do dogs have to live such short lives?" And quietly, the boy spoke: "We're put on this earth to learn how to love. But dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long." I cannot account for the legitimacy of the tale, but that does not make the message any less true.

Derek, you loved Ali. And Ali loved you. And it hurts that she is gone. It probably always will. I don't know if you believe in heaven, or a similar thing, but if you do: Ali will wait for you. Just like she always did. She will wait for you and one day you'll see her again. And until that day, though it is no real comfort in the face of loss, know that you loved and were loved in return. All Ali could've wished for was for you to be with her, in her final moments. And you were.

Friendships are strange and wonderful things - none moreso than that shared with an animal. And all endings hurt. Just as all beginnings give you hope. But simply because the start is fresh and new and happy, and the end far from it, does not lessen the joy of the time between.

Grief is a pain I know all too well. And it never gets easier. Nor should anyone expect it to. Loss is, unfortunately, a part of life. And whilst it is the worst part, it is nonetheless necessary.

As the Doctor put it: "Everything's got to end sometime. Otherwise nothing would ever get started."

An end is defined by a beginning; just as the opposite is true. But that doesn't mean the time between has to be affected by either. Remember that time. All the silly memories, of times laced through with laughter and joy. All the quiet times, where companiable silence was the greatest comfort of all. Remember all the blissful times, when you wondered if anything else really mattered - and on the realisation that it does, the questioning of why it should. And remember the sad times. Remember those too. They are just as important. And when it hurts - and it will - remember the life Ali lived was a life spent in perpetual joy: a simple, unsullied happiness, that held its roots and found its origin within your existence.

And I realised I understood the ongoings a lot better, and was more able to appreciate what was there, also. And just, in general, how good it was. I re-read the first two books both quickly and enjoyably, and then headed to the bookshop to purchase books 3,4, and 5. And it just occurred to me how well written they were(are).

But, that said I'm glad I read them when I was younger, too, because that allowed me to appreciate that difference in sort of understanding and whatnot. And also, I wouldn't want to be deprived of awesome books, even if I didn't get the full content and offering out of them at the time. :)

@Trip: I understand what you're saying. I just object to how they aren't portraying a religion properly with those key standpoints. I said a lot about in in my Angry Speech, but I can't be bothered to find that.
I object to the way they portray people in one religion as robots who all think the same, I guess. They don't really, but it's like how I am with spoilers. The merest hint sparks me off.

It's like when we have Christian assemblies. Actually, it isn't, I just want to rant. They're always really bad from a Christian point of view, and it just bugs me. They have a fun activity, and then they start nattering on about God and everyone just switches off. It's like when you drive past churches that save JESUS IS OUR SAVIOUR or whatever. It's all very well telling people that, but they'll never get anything from it if they don't believe he exists. In services on Christmas Eve and that, they're geared up for new people, and they always talk about how Jesus is a superhero, usually with a fun activity about superheroes. What they need to be saying is WHY you would believe that Jesus is a superhero. It's like . . . plenty of people accept that Lord Voldemort is evil, but they don't generally fear him because he doesn't exist. They know Lord Voldemort is evil. We don't need to tell them that. We should be pointing how why you would believe he exists. (Uh, metaphor.)
Also . . . my mum doesn't like services which are too casual. She says that in her job (uh, this was her former job), it's life and death, and it's too light, these services. She says that if people have come to a church service when they don't believe, they're often desperate and they're really looking to find God because they need to have some hope, and that these services just aren't doing that. I pointed out that they were telling us to find God, but they were more telling us to go off and do it in our free time, not giving us the opportunity to do it there, and she liked that thought.
. . .
I don't even know where I'm going anymore.

You try writing an RE sheet that states at every junction that not everyone in the religion believes this exactly, it would be three pages long. @Star: *nods* Fair enough. :)

Um, I'll just add that all of the GCSE RS work I did wasn't 'A Christian would say...', or 'Hindus believe...', but 'A Christian MIGHT agree...', 'SOME ____s would think...' or something along those lines. I don't really agree with their approach, but I think the point is the linking of teachings to situations, so that's just what I did.

@Star: I rarely write the truth in my German work, because I don't think of it as me. I think of it like writing a story, through another character's point of view. It's more interesting, and also more yielding to write "I do swimming training twice each week, and go walking fairly often. They can both be tiring and quite boring, but it's better than watching TV. I'd like to try out paragliding, but it's too expensive, and the journey is too long.", than writing, "I do no sports in my free time. Now and again, I do go walking, but mostly, I think sport is hard, and I am too lazy for it.", for example.
I just build from another character. If I thought of it as lying, I think I'd struggle to get the grades.

((Essentially, that's RE right there Adra. In my old school RE was taught by a guy who was clearly a Christian, and always kind of acted under the assumption everyone else was too. He still taught it as it should be, but in a context I didn't agree with.

*drives away in a paper-monster-hearse, because I just saw my mini-TMBG-paper-monster-hearse from across the room, and needed mode of transport. :P*
